In Fremont County we have the Whitetail prairie dog. It is seldom of economic concern except where it damages irrigation ditches or digs holes in lawns. The populations are cyclical and an increase in prairie dog numbers has been noted in 2004 through 2006 and they are at the pest level in many areas around the county. There is no organized control effort by the District as this animal is native to the state. Individual colonies that are causing damage beyond the economic level can be controlled by trapping, shooting, and toxicants. The District stocks poison bait and gas cartridges as a service to landowners who need to regulate prairie dog populations on their land. Please call the District for control assistance.
