Baby’s Breath (Fremont County declared weed)

Baby’s breath is an ornamental species that was introduced from Europe and escaped cultivation.
Once established it forms dense stands and is difficult to control.

Growth Habit: Bushy perennial with widely branching stems to 3 feet in height.

Leaves: Paired leaves up to 4 inches long with sharp points.

Flower: Five-lobed calyx, small white petals. Flowers June to August.

Seeds: Fruit produces small capsule, containing two to five small seeds, each with a finely pebbled surface.

Other: Often used in floral arrangements.

Status: County Declared Noxious Weed, Category 2. Localized, no tolerance of new infestations and aggressive
control on all known infestations.

Control: Hand-pulling or digging is effective but difficult because of the plant’s large taproot. Herbicides are effective. FCWP offers a 40 percent Cost Share on chemicals for controlling this species. Contact your local weed and pest
